Vehicle history:
One of the few carrozzeria Moderna Furgone
vehicles. This vehicle was originally used by Alfa Romeo in the Arese
factory to transport parts etcetera. After 2 years the vehicle was
registered as a road vehicle and sold by an Alfa Romeo dealer. The
second owner painted the vehicle white. It had a tough second life.
After the second owner found the vehicle no longer useful it was left in
quite poor state as can be seen on some pictures below. The third owner
was an Italian gentlemen from Milan. He restored the vehicle to its
original condition except for the decals and used it to his full satisfaction. Here is an extract from an e-mail communication between the the third Italian owner and a well known Dutch Alfasud expert;

What a surprise!!!!! My Van.....it's in the same conditions when I sold it, except for the front bumper; I recognize the same radio, the wooden shift knob and the little patchwork on the dashboard: WOW !!!! The time we're stopped ???
"I was told it was
used on the factory ground of Alfa Romeo in Naples, is that
correct?"
This "one
off" van was made by Alfasud in Pomigliano and born in Nov.'78 as
Giardinetta (rosso AR 530); was assigned at Alfa Romeo Arese factory
(but Portello/via Gallarate, 45 -MILANO registered...) and there
modified in van, with another Giardinetta modified as pick-up only
for Arese internal use, and homologate in Feb.'79 for road
circulation like small truck in only one piece.
They're
used for fast deliveries from Arese to Balocco and stay in Filiale
Alfa Romeo di Torino about two years; solded at an authorized Alfa
Romeo workshop in 1991 and, one week before his demolition, bought
by me (1993) for 250.000 lire (about today 125,00 Euro) and
completely overhauled. I remember this car like a little big van,
indestructible, fast and very funny on mountain roads and extremely
easy to maintenance.
Why did you sell it,
and how did it end up in the Netherlands??
I've sold my van
for a chronic need of space: in the same period I've sold a '69
Innocenti Mini Minor and a '64 Alfa Romeo 2 van (ex Italian Military
Air Force ambulance) and I remember very well the Sunday morning
(06.30 a.m.) when the Alfasud was charged on car carrier and started
with other eight old various cars to Holland: SIGH !!
************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************ As you can see in the e-mail extract above that it is a miracle that the vehicle still exist today. The previous owner states it as a one-off vehicle made by Alfa Romeo, but it's more probable that it's one of the few vehicles made by carrozzeria Moderna. The fact that during the restoration process in the nineties in Italy the remains of the "standard" Alfa Romeo stickers appeared supports this estimation. From 1998 till 2002 the car was in use as a service vehicle for the Dutch Alfa Romeo specialist van Neerijnen. In 2002 it was bought by it's current owner who is slowly restoring it. |
