February 2014 - Door repair

After a long period of no welding activities the left and right door are now taken care of by the "Chirurg". The doors on my car are for a third series Alfasud which means the rearview mirror position is lower than the one for the first & second series vehicles.  Due to the fact I brought my car to the welder in 2010 and we're currently already in 2014 the information I provided to the welder was not so fresh anymore. With the normal high "Chirurg" quality the rearview mirror sections for the left and right door are addressed, the current slotted holes on the lh door and the protruding sections on the rh door are removed and the door surface is made flush. For convenience weld nuts are added to the inside of the doors. As mentioned unfortunately due to the long period between requesting the welding activities and the actual execution the information that the mirror attachment position should be changed was lost and the 3rd series position was kept. It must be frustrating for the welder but the now the work has to be done once more. First I need to get detailed information about the correct position of the mirror holes. I will try to get that information through the forum of the Dutch Alfa Romeo club.

Lh-door, slotted holes for rear view mirror attachment.

Lh-door, nice flush surface with small holes & weld nuts, unfortunately in too low position.

Rh-door, protruding threaded features for rear view mirror attachment.

In addition to the rearview mirror section repair the welder also removed the paint to the bare metal on the lower section of the door to check if any rust virus is present there. As expected there is no way around it and of course rust is found although at a first sight the geometry looks pretty solid. Some additional work which was taken into my original considerations for the project have to be executed. After experiencing so many additional required activities there is no shock effect anymore, I'm feeling pretty numb when it comes to these matters these days.

Lh-door, paint removed from lower section. Looking pretty solid from a distance.

22-February-2014: On the same day of the door repair activities by the welder I also received the notification to renew the registration of my car from the Dutch vehicle registration office "RDW". The online service to complete this action is very convenient and easy to use so the topic can be dealt with easily. Now I just have to wait till the new papers arrive.

23-February-2014: After receiving the pictures from the welder I immediately put up a request on the Dutch Alfa club forum and received several kind and helpful replies with people showing in detail where the rear view mirror holes are supposed to be. The information I provided to the "Chirurg" in 2010 when I brought my car to him is not accurate enough to enable a craftsman to do his work meticulously. As previously stated several times such help from club members is vital to bringing my car as close as possible to the original condition in which it left the Pomigliano d'Arco factory in 1977. A sincere thanks goes out to the 3 kind gentlemen who replied and provided the excellent information.
